SA: Firefighters monitoring Eyre Peninsula fire
ADELAIDE, Dec 28 AAP - Firefighters are monitoring a blaze on South Australia's Eyre
Peninsula which has burnt about 18,000 hectares of scrub.
The fire at Pinkawillinie on the Eyre Peninsula and three separate blazes near the
Billiatt Conservation Park about 150km north-east of the capital are of concern to firefighters
who battled more than 60 small-scale fires yesterday.
Most fires are believed to have been started by lightning, with the Bureau of Meteorology
reporting about 14,500 lightning strikes across the state yesterday.
A SA Country Fire Service spokesman said additional crews had been sent to fight the
Pinkawillinie fire and those near the Billiatt park today, supported by waterbombing aircraft.
"The majority of the fires across the state are currently contained with the only ones
of significant concern being adjacent Billiatt Conservation Park near Karoonda and at
Pinkawillinie," a spokesman said.
Three fires were burning adjacent the Billiatt Conservation Park, the largest of the
three at Charleston Road, which has burnt 1,000 hectares of land.
