Fed:Howard beatable when fog of war lifts: Rudd

Labor says Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD is beatable once the fog of war lifts.

Labor's foreign affairs spokesman KEVIN RUDD says he never thought the war would help Labor.

And he's played down speculation about Opposition Leader SIMON CREAN'S future as hecontinues to slip in the polls, saying journalists are getting their knickers in a twist.

Mr RUDD's told ABC TV that when war's on there's a natural tendency across any countryto rally round the flag.

He says Labor's having difficulty getting its message on foreign policy -- let aloneon bulkbilling, education and family policy -- into the media.

But he says that when the fog of war lifts, things will change.

Mr RUDD says Mr HOWARD will be found wanting on baseline questions about Australia'slong-term national security interests.
