NSW: Fares to rise this month and again soon after

Train, bus and ferry users will pay higher fares from this month but bigger increasescould be just around the corner.

The Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal has granted a five per cent increasein Sydney train and bus fares and 7.5 per cent for ferry fares from August 31.

Higher fares for private buses and taxis have also been also approved.

Tribunal member JAMES COX says public transport fares are up to make passengers paymore and tax payers less.

Transport Minister MICHAEL COSTA says taxpayers are forking out more on public transportwhile fares are a declining proportion of revenue.

Opposition transport spokesman MIKE GALLACHER warns that fares will rise again, withthe major rise still to come.
