QLD:New prison won't solve overcrowding: Opp

The Queensland opposition says a prison in the state's south east will not solve overcrowding
issues.

Corrective Services Minister NEIL ROBERTS officially opened the 300-bed, 485 million
dollar Southern Queensland Correctional Centre near Gatton, west of Brisbane yesterday.

However, opposition corrective services spokesman JARROD BLEIJIE says the opening is
an example of the government's waste and mismanagement, after the nearby Borallon jail,
which can house 480 prisoners, was closed.

Mr BLEIJIE says a jail at Woodford north of Brisbane with a 500-strong capacity has
also been closed, and he predicts the new Gatton jail will be overflowing.
